Our Hotels

Sapienza Travel has chosen four and five-star hotels to ensure your complete comfort on our tours. Where possible, we have searched out smaller hotels to provide a more intimate environment and which are housed in buildings that have played a role in history; either for who have stayed in them, who commissioned them or who designed them. It is part of our philosophy to immerse you as much as we can in the stories of the cities you visit on a Sapienza Travel tour.

Its original name was Palais Württemberg. The building was transformed into a hotel in 1873 and today, the Hotel Imperial is, perhaps, Vienna's most exclusive five-star hotel. It is conveniently located on the Ringstraße, close to all the museums, galleries and the Vienna State Opera.

Hotel Edouard VII
Hotel Edouard VII was built in 1877 in the Haussmanian style and was named after Albert, Prince of Wales who was a frequent guest at the hotel prior to his coronation as King Edward VII. The French authorities also acknowledged Edward, having decided after his death to create Place Edouard VII in his honour a few steps from the hotel and to erect an equestrian statue to his glory (the sculptor Paul Landowski was chosen, in a competition) in front of the renowned eponymous theatre which opened its doors not long afterwards.

The recent renovation of Edouard VII was inspired by Edward VII, based on a meticulous study of the personality of Edward VII the man: his life, his background, his journeys, his loves. The hotel decoration includes a combination of materials such as the padded wall, the stylised furniture creations of Christophe Daudré, the association of accessories such as the Prince of Wales chair, cashmere rugs and the poetic notes inscribed on the walls, creating a luxuriously stylish guest environment.

The hotel is situated a stone's throw from the Palais Garnier, the Rue St Honore and is an easy walk to the Louvre, the Petit Palais and the Tuileries Gardens.

Hotel Degli Orafi
The building the Hotel Degli Orafi is housed in incorporates an ancient tower, presumably part of the clique of the Importuni family, which had their properties in this neighborhood. In 1515 the building was bought by the Augustinians, who continued to manage the property until 1783. In the 19th-century, it became the boarding house Quisisana, popular amongst English and American intellectuals and artists visiting Florence.

The building had remained almost unchanged up until the early 1980s and because of this was chosen by the director James Ivory as the set for some of the scenes of the movie version of the novel by EM Forster's "A Room with a View."

Then, after undergoing some necessary restoration works and a major renovation, the building became home to Hotel Degli Orafi. Externally the building overlooks the Lugarno degli Archibusieri.

Breakfast is served in what was once a ballroom, decorated with original 19th-century frescoes overlooking the Arno. From the beautiful rooftop terrace of the American Bar, there is a breathtaking view over the river Arno, Palazzo Vecchio, Brunelleschi's magnificent Dome and the hills which surround Florence.

Hotel Orto de'Medici
Hotel Orto de 'Medici is located in Florence on  Via San Gallo, one of the oldest streets in the city. Originally the continuation of the Roman "Cardus Maximus" route, the north-south axis that dominated the entire city plan, became part of the historical nucleus, which was true only in the Middle Ages.

In the fifteenth century, during the Renaissance, the street was especially rich in monasteries and green areas, among which stood out the  Garden of San Marco (now the Orto de 'Medici), used as an art school by Lorenzo the Magnificent. When in the eighteenth century the Lorraine took power in Florence, the Garden of San Marco had already become the private property of the villa where the Grand Duke Leopold kept his lover, the dancer Livia Raimondi Malfatti.

In the nineteenth century, it was Grand Duke himself who reimagined the face of the street, building the stately buildings that still survive today: the same building of the Hotel Orto de 'Medici dates back to this period. The building belonged to the Socci Family, whose coat of arms still stands at the entrance of the Palace, which wanted to embellish the residence with splendid frescoes that have been completely restored today. The internal garden remained intact but was enriched by a  terrace overlooking, which is accessed by a frescoed room with exotic natural scenes and where today is still served breakfast at the Orto de 'Medici.

The Bufalini family purchased the building as a whole in the mid-twentieth century and thanks to a careful restoration by the Roberto Magris & Partners architecture firm (now Melucci Nardini Architetti Associati), the Hotel was born.

Here you can enjoy the parquet and the original frescoes and the typical Florentine charm of two centuries ago that the place is still able to emanate. Thanks to the enthusiasm of the new management and the professionalism of all the staff, the structure is distinguished by a particularly welcoming atmosphere and a modern and efficient organization.

Legend has it that Michelangelo was sculpting the head of an old faun when Lorenzo passed by and mocked to the young man that there was a mistake because if the faun was old, he had to be rather toothless and not show perfect teeth. The boy promptly removed a tooth from the sculpture with the chisel, arousing the laughter of the Magnificent and giving life to a friendship and an artistic association that made Michelangelo the great sculptor we all know.

Today there is nothing left of that school, but the small garden remains, which the Hotel Orto de 'Medici in Florence jealously guards inside. The garden has been carefully restored and the roses are still cultivated, dominated by an ancient cinnamon tree, which in spring gives a wonderful flowering.
