For those of you interested in great art, Tim Wright offers a range of painting holidays and masterclasses. This is an opportunity to experience the world of the artist’s studio and to investigate the methods and materials of painting. He will guide you through the basics of technique and provide the opportunity to investigate your own potential, whether you are new to painting or someone eager to develop their existing practice. These course are focussed around a particular artist. At present, you can choose from Caravaggio, Tiepolo, Turner, Degas, Manet and Sargent.

The aim is to give the client a taste of the atmosphere and creative context of the artist’s workplace and a ‘hands-on’ experience of their practice, explaining methods, materials and historical context. The physicality of this process will give a more direct connection to the artist. The best part of the day is spent painting, with breaks for discussion and refreshment. A full range of the necessary tools and materials will be provided, as well as the appropriate life-models and props. The week will be structured so that, in addition to a series of studies and exercises, the client has a painting to take home.

In studying these artists we do not seek to create a pastiche or copy, but to try and convey something of their creative processes and practical concerns. Inspired by their example, we aim to help the client to make a painting which is their own, not a facsimile. With brush or chalk in hand, paint and medium on the palette and paper or canvas to apply it to, we can open up the artist’s world and reach a better understanding of the paintings which we are so intrigued and fascinated by.

The masterclasses will be located in spaces which are evocative of, and pertinent to, a particular artist; for example, Caravaggio and Tiepolo will be located in atmospheric studios in Italy. The aim is to create an environment which reflects something of the age and spirit of the chosen painter; to look at and paint a dramatically-lit model in a sixteenth-century palazzo makes an effective and exciting connection to Caravaggio’s world.

This will be an experience which is a small, but intense, taste of an artist’s world. It should give a broader understanding of painting in general and an insight into the work of the chosen artist in particular.
After arriving at Rome Fiumicino airport, we transfer to the Hotel Della Conciliazione located near the Vatican. We walk over to the Piazza del Popolo to view Caravaggio's scenes from the Life of St Paul in the Cerasi Chapel of Santa Maria del Popolo. The church is rich with art; the Cerasi altarpiece is an Assumption of the Virgin by Caravaggio's rival, Annibale Carracci. This evening, we dine together at a local restaurant.
After breakfast, we set out across the Tiber to the Contarelli Chapel in San Luigi dei Francesi. The chapel houses three Caravaggio paintings on the life of St Matthew; The Calling of St Matthew, The Inspiration of St Matthew and The Martyrdom of St Matthew. After time for coffee (not included), we walk to St Augustine's to view its most famous painting; Caravaggio's Madonna of Loreto.

Then we walk to the St John University of Rome and set-up in the painting studio in this typical 18th-century Roman building.
